Would you like to make a summer lantern…join us at a workshop and we will show you how!

What a wonderful few weeks of weather we have had in the UK …was it to hot for you?

As I am very fair skinned I tend to stay in the shade a lot but do look forward to sitting in the garden of an evening and relaxing whilst listening to the birds serenading us.

I think a lot of people have found their garden to be a sanctuary over the last year and there has been a lot of decor introduced to make it an extension of the home. Have you spruced up the garden with new some lights or furniture?

A little bit of an Indian Summer

We have just added a new date for our very popular Indian Block Printing workshop and this month you will get the opportunity to make a couple of these tea light holders. Perfect for adding a subtle light to the evening.

Spring is on its way and its time to get crafty?

As I look out of my window today there is some definite signs of spring on the way and it is time to come out of the winter hibernation and get crafty!.

Spring is a sign of renewal and with a few flowers appearing along the hedgerows we are all beginning to feel a little more joyous. With Mothers day and Spring just around the corner there are lots of reasons to shake of the cloudy skies and get crafting to bring some cheer into your home.

If you need some inspiration we have quite a few workshops lined up and with a focus on sustainability . A bunch of blooming flowers is always nice to receive but they will wilt ( don’t forget to put them in your compost bin) so how about attending our flowers rag rugging workshop and we will show you how to make beautiful flowers from upcycled fabric?

Another great versatile craft to try is our ever popular Indian Block printing workshop, you could print a tote bag or maybe some fresh crisp pillowcases or a cushion….or all of them!

Of course as we step into spring and start to venture out into the garden we will of course be looking at a range of bunting…sheep and apple trees anybody?

Knitting or Crochet?

So are you a knitter or do you favour crochet or maybe you have learnt to do both, do you think one is easier that one is easier that the other….so many questions?

I have dabbled with both of these crafts over the years but would not say that I am fluent in either!. Both knitting and crochet will enable you to make lots of clothing item, home decor and of course soft toys that may become a family heirloom.

Maybe you don’t really have a preference and it is just the purchasing of the beautiful skeins of yarn that attracts you…or have you attended one of our workshops and are now hooked?

Over the next few months I will let you know how I get on with my renewed interest in these crafts but in the interim let me know if you have a favourite and why?.

We are ready to craft and it would be great if you could join us. This year we will be introducing some new crafts just for you at our studio in Leicestershire. We are very much thinking about sustainability and how we can reduce waste and if you know anybody who crafts, you’ll know that they like to keep all their little odds and ends of materials…just in  case.

A great way of using scraps of fabric is some patchwork. Large quilts might spring to mind but patchwork is great for smaller projects and compliments denim very well. If you have a hole or worn bit in your jeans now is the time to patch it! Preparing a scrap of fabric to be used as a patch for craftPatchwork can be very simple to start with, just cut your fabric remnants or maybe a preloved shirt into squares or strips and then sew right sides together, open out the seams and press. Once you have a few pieces of patchwork then sew then to your garment. This can be a very simple but effective running stich and voila – extra wear from a garment that you may have otherwise discarded.

If you would like to have a rummage through our fabric scraps and try some patchwork why not book onto one of our workshops?.

The mornings are getting lighter and the days are getting longer…must be time to be thinking about some Spring Craft ideas. There are so many crafts that you can do at home to get your creative juices flowing and they do not have to be expensive and can involve the children ( some activities may need supervision).

Some of the easy DIYs for example would be to use old magazines to cut out Easter shapes and string together for bunting. Or if you would like to make something more generic may for the garden you could upcycle an old quilt cover to make bunting and sew by machine or hand.

What about some Salt Dough ( lots of recipes on the internet) or Air Dry Clay Eggs, a perfect excuse to get out those cookie cutters that you have gathered over the years but you could also go free style with your shapes or use some containers to cut your shapes, I find yogurt pots are the perfect size ( just remember to eat the yoghurt and rinse the pot first or it will get messy!). Once the egg has dried you can use some pens to write your Easter message.

As I have been getting our dedicated studio ready for our workshops in the summer I have been sorting through my collection and I think there is room for more. What also amazes me as I uncover the stash is that a book that has been published more than 20 years ago has the same techniques used today, the only difference is sometimes the materials used.

Like many crafters ( did you know according the National Craft report crafters have as many as 5 projects on the go at once!) I have tried many crafts so the collection includes quilting, rag rugging, needle felting, quilling, teddy bear making, soap making, bees wax, wet felting….and that is just the first shelf!

Now they say that you cannot teach a dog new tricks but I think there is always room to learn something new so over the next few months I will be reviewing some of my books and also comparing some new releases now available on the market and of course if you attend one of our workshops you can have a browse through our collection for inspiration.

I think like most people I am glad to see to see the back of 2020 and start the year with trepidation but also with some hope.

Roots

Last year I had a lot of plans and made the decision to put down some roots for my small business. Over the last few years it has been great fun attending craft fairs and events and hosting workshops at venues but there also comes a time when you really just want to have everything in one place and not be loading stock in and out of the car/office/garage.

Not on the High Street

As I knew I would not be in my business every day and I would not be hiring staff, the decision to not rent a unit on the high street was an easy one. I wanted somewhere accessible 24/7, within each reach of home and within easy reach of public transport and parking so customers could attend my workshops.

it is difficult to find affordable suitable premises but I had my eye on somewhere local but had to wait for a unit to become available. After a few phone calls and a fleeting visit on a Friday afternoon in November 2020 a match was found – The Springboard Centre in Coalville!

Tune in next month for an update and the plans for 2021

Did you know you can felt in the washing machine?. You may have accidently done this with your favourite knitted jumper that you put on a hot wash by mistake. So why would you want to purposely put the wool in the washing machine?. Well it can save you a lot of time if you have a project that you need to complete in a hurry.

Soap & Agitation

Felt is made by adding water, soap and lots of agitation will make wool fibres attach together and most f the time I do this by hand, I have been making some bird pods lately and these take around 2 hours to lay out and felt but half way through I can add to the washing machine and save about 40 minutes and my arm muscles.

Not all wool will however felt and each time you undertake a project the results may differ due to the type of wool and water temperature. The bird pods are ideal for the washing machine method as they are all unique in colour size and texture.

So the next time you accidently shrink a garment…tell them it was meant to be.

Although I make a lot of felt items to sell I also buy felt from Fair Trade suppliers. Over the last few years I have visited many trade shows to talk to suppliers to ensure there is traceability of the gifts I was purchasing and they are part of a Fair Trade scheme which you can read about here https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/ . The supplier I now buy from has been a Fair Trade organisation for over 20 years in Nepal so they have been able to build and sustain relationships with the surrounding families and towns.

The wool used by the wonderful artistic Nepalese crafters is New Zealand wool , brought in a raw state which is then washed, carded and dyed with a fantastic rainbow of colours. Then comes the hard work with the wet felting. with some wool, warm water, soap and a lot of elbow grease you can make some fantastic items from small keyrings an inch wide to vast blankets and clothing. If you have never tried wet felting it is very therapeutic – you can book onto one of our workshops and try it your yourself when we get beyond Covid.

Crafting with no chance of social interaction!. My husband has already had the weekend forecast, it has been another busy week at work with not much time or energy for crafting, but this weekend I am going to put that right.

For my day job I do a lot of planning and usually when it comes to my crafting I am quite fluid and may swap between crafts at a weekend, however this time I have actually made a list…..what is the world coming to?. The reason for the list is that I have decided to unpick a few and have a clear out – shock horror.

Crafts of the past

I love to try new crafts and I am not alone. Did you know the results from the annual crafters survey show people have about 5 crafts on the go at once…I think I am slightly over by about 3, ok maybe 4.
